NEPG expects 3,5% increase in potato acreage in 2014

Based upon first indications and grower surveys where available, the North-Western European Potato Growers (NEPG) initial area estimate for the five potato producing countries (Beigium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and GB) indicates growth in ware potatoes ( excluding seed and starch) for the 2014 season. At almost 550,000 ha this is an increase of 3,5% compared with last season with France and Belgium expecting the greatest increases compared with the 2013 crop year. It is also 4% higher than the five year average. In addition, the mainland NEPG countries report an increase in the number of contracts being signed for the coming season compared to last year, particularly with processors.
